The History of Dhanvanthri Nilayam Ayurveda

Ayurveda

the traditional system of medicine that has existed in India for more than 5,000 years, is a holistic way of life that emphasizes harmony and balance among the body, mind, and spirit. Traditionally associated with the Atharva Veda, Ayurveda follows an integrated approach to health and well-being through natural medicines, therapeutic procedures, appropriate diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyle practices.

At Dhanvanthri Nilayam, we strive to preserve the authenticity and wisdom of this ancient system while adapting our approach to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the present generation.

Dhanvanthri Nilayam Ayurveda Vaidhyasalai

Established in 1945 Dhanvanthri Nilayam Ayurveda Vaidhyasalai was established in 1945 by our beloved and respected grandfather, Dr. (Vaidya) Velayutham Pillai, near the historic Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai. With a vision of promoting Ayurveda and serving society through this traditional system of medicine, Dr. Velayutham Pillai laid the foundation for what would become a multi-generational legacy in Ayurvedic healthcare.

The tradition was subsequently carried forward by our beloved father, Dr. V. Somasekar, with the wholehearted support of Mrs. Subbulakshmi Somasekar. The clinic, which was initially located near the Meenakshi Amman Temple, was later shifted to Dhanappamudali Street and subsequently relocated to Alagappan Nagar, Madurai, where the institution continues its services today. The legacy was then carried forward by the third generation, Dr. S. Dhanvanthri Premvel, Chairman and Chief Physician of Dhanvanthri Nilayam. He joined hands with his father in 1995 and dedicated himself to continuing and expanding the family's tradition of authentic Ayurvedic healthcare. Under his leadership, Dhanvanthri Nilayam has expanded its presence across Tamil Nadu, while remaining committed to the fundamental principles and authenticity of Ayurveda.

Today, the legacy continues into the fourth generation with Dr. Vishak P. Dhanvanthri, BAMS., MD (Ayu), who represents the next generation of the family dedicated to the practice, preservation, and advancement of Ayurveda. With every generation, the core principles of Ayurveda have remained intact, while each physician has contributed their own knowledge, experience, and clinical expertise to the continuing journey of Dhanvanthri Nilayam. Today, with a team of 23 doctors and more than 20 branches, Dhanvanthri Nilayam continues its mission of making authentic Ayurvedic healthcare accessible to a wider community.

A Four-Generation Legacy of Ayurveda

The journey of Dhanvanthri Nilayam is a story of four generations united by a common commitment to Ayurveda.

Carrying forward the knowledge, values, and traditions passed down through four generations, Dr. Vishak P. Dhanvanthri continues the family's commitment to authentic Ayurvedic healthcare. As a fourth-generation physician, he represents the continuity of a legacy that began in 1945 and continues to evolve with the changing needs of the present generation. His journey reflects the institution's commitment to nurturing the next generation of Ayurvedic physicians while preserving the fundamental principles and traditional wisdom that form the foundation of Dhanvanthri Nilayam.
